  • ¼ cup sugar
  • 1 packet active dry yeast (2¼ teaspoons)
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ¾ cup warm milk
  • ¼ cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 large egg
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • ½ cup sugar
  • ¼ cup cornstarch
  • 2 large egg yolks
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 23 tablespoons milk
  • ½ teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. In a bowl, combine warm milk, yeast, and sugar. Let sit for 5 minutes until foamy.
  2. Add melted butter, egg, salt, and flour. Mix and knead until soft dough forms.
  3. Cover and let dough rise for 1 hour or until doubled in size.
  4. Roll dough into a rectangle and place in a greased baking pan. Bake at 350°F for 20–25 minutes until golden. Cool completely.
  5. For the cream, whisk milk, sugar, cornstarch, and egg yolks in a saucepan over medium heat until thick.
  6. Remove from heat and stir in butter and vanilla. Cool slightly.
  7. Slice baked pastry horizontally, spread cream evenly, and place top layer back on.
  8. Mix glaze ingredients and drizzle over the top.
  9. Chill for 1 hour before slicing into squares.

  • Ensure milk is warm but not hot to activate yeast properly.
  • Let the dough rise in a warm place for best results.
  • Chilling before slicing helps set the cream filling.
